Vectorworks 2020 Teaser Tuesday - VGM Level of Detail

27/8/2019

This #TeaserTuesday, we’re teasing an update to the Vectorworks Graphics Module (VGM) that will make Vectorworks 2020 run much smoother than previous versions.

The VGM affects how Vectorworks generates and presents 2D and 3D geometry. In version 2019, loading tons of geometry could slow down your computer, especially on larger projects. Users occasionally reported slow frame rates when panning or zooming, and often loading files could take longer than anticipated.

The update for 2020 addresses these issues. The software will seem more realistic — as you zoom out, you’ll notice less and less detail on geometry, mimicking the way the human eye operates. As you zoom back in, geometry will load with its customary high level of detail.
This occurs at a micro level, unseen to the user — we generate geometry in Vectorworks with tessellation/triangulation, wherein the software generates more vertices to show higher levels of detail. The 2020 update means Vectorworks won’t load unnecessary vertices as the object moves farther from the virtual camera — which, for larger projects, can easily cut memory use in half.  When Vectorworks runs smoother, your designs can become reality even sooner.

Over the last few years JRA has worked closely with award winning architecture, planning and urban design practice West Waddy, based in beautiful Abingdon, Oxfordshire. As well as providing regular Vectorworks training sessions over the years to support new and existing staff, JRA also provided some BIM consultancy services assisting the practice with setting up a 3D/ BIM model for Lord Wandsworth College Science Block.
Above is a small selection of the diverse range of projects the practice undertakes
About West Waddy ADP

" Originally founded in Abingdon in 1885 the Practice passed through three generations of the West family before merging to form West Waddy in 1986. A further merger with Associated Design Partnership, Oxford in 1999 created the multi-disciplinary practice of West Waddy ADP.

The three Partners, Philip Waddy, Stephen Simkins and Andrew Bateson lead a team of Architects, Planners, and Urban Designers whom comprise a fully integrated built environment consultancy.
West Waddy operates from its riverside studio in the market town of Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The building has a long history of occupation and some elements of the original medieval dyehouse noted in Amyce’s 1554 survey of Abingdon still remain.

With a well-established reputation for good design and creative problem solving, our client base is broad and varied. Well known in Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley, West Waddy continues to broaden its horizons throughout London and the South.

In 2014 West Waddy formed an association with Archadia Architects, London. The team at Archadia are specialists in social and private housing, healthcare, and special needs services."

Vectorworks, the first BIM software to receive IFC4 export certification

22/8/2019

Vectorworks, the first BIM software to receive IFC4 export certification, now supports your Open BIM workflows better than ever before.

In April 2019, Vectorworks achieved IFC4 Reference View 1.2 Export Certification from buildingSMART International (bSI) — the global authority driving transformation of the built asset economy through open, international standards.
Picture
So, what does this mean for your workflow?
Think of IFC functioning like HTML. We built the blog you’re reading with a code that’s equally accessible on Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or any other web browser. If you share this post with a friend, they can view it with their own preferred browser and experience the exact same display.
With IFC import/export capabilities, you have the freedom to choose your design software and still experience the same 3D models as everyone else on the project. The open-source format means you aren’t forced into using one solution just for easier file exchange. After all, architects and electrical engineers often don’t work in the same software.

“The IFC file format gives focus to the standardized exchange of data when sharing information among different software systems used in the building industry,” explained Rubina Siddiqui, director of product marketing at Vectorworks.

Without IFC, BIM is only possible in a closed environment. It uniquely supports both 3D geometry and data, allowing crucial tasks like clash detection to be done entirely in 3D. It creates a collaborative environment for everyone’s expertise to coexist.

A publicly defined and accepted standard, IFC4 export criteria serves as a basis for contracts by facilitating interoperability. This not only supports your Open BIM workflow, rather it enhances it — allowing architects, engineers, landscape professionals, and construction teams to communicate with a common language.
“With the IFC data manager, all doors are open to us for proper IFC model exports, which are tailored to the information requirements of the customer without having to constantly adapt our internal databases, classifications, or naming conventions,” said Marc Pancera, associate and head of BIM Research & Development at IttenBrechbühl AG.

“Of course, the mapping part requires a certain understanding of the IFC data model from our BIM Champions,” he said, “but fortunately this is publicly documented — just read it yourself!”

Vectorworks 2020 Teaser Tuesday 13/8/19 : Schematic Views

20/8/2019

Vectorworks 2020 comes with the new Schematic Views feature, which you can use to create 2D rigging objects that correspond to the 3D model, making plans and documentation much more efficient.
This #TeaserTuesday, enjoy the sophisticated, precise documentation of rigging objects with our new feature for the entertainment industry — Schematic Views.

Until version 2020, to present rigging plans, users would have to create design layer viewports with the Create Plot and Model View tools, a workflow that can substantially affect the software’s performance*. Many users felt that this workflow limited their creativity — especially on projects with quick turnarounds.
With 2020, Schematic Views are an easy way to create 2D objects that correspond to the 3D model. You can either insert them right into the current design layer or they can live in their own design layer, which you can view hand-in-hand with the design. Either way, when you make a change to a schematic object, the change automatically reflects in its 3D component.

This workflow is not only more efficient — it also means you can present 2D plans and documentation better than ever before.

*Software performance Update
Since Apple’s June release of its 10.15 macOS, Catalina, our engineers have been diligently working to discern its impact on Vectorworks 2019 and Vectorworks 2020. We’ve been beta testing to ensure optimum user experience with the official release of Catalina.

Vectorworks 2020 Teaser Tuesday 13/8/19 : Live Data Visualisation

13/8/2019

" For this week’s #TeaserTuesday, we’re excited to show you a new feature that will empower you to make informed design decisions.

With live data visualization, you can use data to define graphic attributes — say, for example, you want to classify walls, walkways, and doors according to fire code standards. You can set the walls’ colors so you have a visual reminder of what’s appended to the wall: restrictions, criteria, parameters, etc."
Data visualization first appeared in Vectorworks 2017, but back then it was confined to viewports. 2020 brings data to the forefront: right in the design layer where you make your design decisions. It’s a live working environment where you can accurately discern the impact of your data, an addition that goes a long way in designing intelligently.

This feature is a useful new way to make design changes and see their impact immediately — creating an all-together proactive design environment.

"This is a very powerful new feature that allow you to visualise your BIM data in a multitude of ways to show different elements of the design to various stakeholders. Well done Vectorworks for making this powerful feature so accessible for everyone." During the summer heatwave in late July, I was lucky enough to spend two days in Sunny Bournemouth with one of my oldest clients Terence O' Rourke training a new Urban Designer who joined the team.  It was wonderful to meet the team again and see the breadth and quality of the work the practice is working on.  They use Vectorworks Architect and Landmark as their primary tools as its is the only application that covers landscape, urban design and architecture on the Mac platform. They also use a very well developed 3D/ BIM workflow for many of their projects from conception to completion, and a few years a go did contribute an excellent chapter to my book " Innovative Vectorworks BIM" Here a free link to that chapter to download:-

Vectorworks 2020 Teaser Tuesday 6/8/19 : List Browser Direct Editing

6/8/2019

Soon, Vectorworks 2020 will hit the shelves with exciting new features and improvements. In our first of five #TeaserTuesday blogs, learn more about a UI/UX improvement straight from the minds of our users. You asked for it — now here it is.
In past versions of Vectorworks, you’d have to open a separate dialog box to change text. In 2020, you can edit in list browsers directly, which is a substantial quality-of-life improvement. It’s part of an effort to make Vectorworks simpler, because fewer clicks means more time for creativity.

"This feature really will make a huge difference and improvements to all Vectorworks workflows. It will be one of those things that once we get used to it, we won't be able to imagine living without it! Well Done Vectorworks and thanks for making this new feature so elegantly usable while keeping the old workflow too for die hard users. I am currently on holiday in Denmark, and Danish design really does focus on the minimal, clean lines and limited colour palettes and beautiful efficiency. It should be the same with software! Let's make vectorworks the best designed software on the planet"
